Reported production update
Ivanhoe Mines reported on 8 October 2026 that Kamoa-Kakula produced 76,401 tonnes of contained copper in saleable products during Q3 2026, compared with 64,328 tonnes in Q2. The company maintained 2026 guidance of 290,000–310,000 tonnes, while stating that production was trending toward the lower end of that range. Its “saleable products” measure covers different product forms; it must not be described as cathode output. Buyers should read the definitions and full context in the linked primary company release.
Original Afrimet analysis: production is not an offer
A reported production total does not establish that any specific cargo is freely available, allocated to a particular seller, or open for purchase. It also does not prove that an intermediary has authority to market material. A buyer presented with an opportunity referencing this update should request written seller authority and verify it directly with the contracting entity before discussing price, payment or logistics.
The first product question is form. Copper anode, blister, concentrate, slag concentrate and fines are not interchangeable. Each requires its own lot description, assay basis, impurity profile, handling method and commercial deductions. A generic statement that material is “copper” cannot support a quotation or contract.
Match the sample to the lot
Any sample or assay should be traceable to a defined lot through seal numbers, sampling records, dates, weights and custody documents. A laboratory certificate alone does not show that the tested sample represents the cargo being offered. For concentrates and other moisture-bearing products, parties should distinguish wet metric tonnes from dry metric tonnes, agree the moisture determination method and state which weight governs settlement.
Contained copper is not necessarily payable copper. A concentrate transaction may apply payable percentages, treatment and refining charges, moisture adjustments and penalties for specified elements. These inputs should be written and verified rather than inferred from production statistics or a public copper reference price.
Delivery, custody and counterparty controls
A buyer should ask for a realistic delivery schedule tied to an identified lot, inspection point and transport route. The contract must allocate custody, insurance, export documentation and risk at each handover. Claims of immediate delivery should be tested against the material’s location, readiness, carrier arrangements and applicable export requirements.
Counterparty verification remains separate from product verification. Confirm the legal identity, beneficial owners, authorised signatories, banking instructions and sanctions position of each party. Payment instructions involving an unrelated entity or a late change of beneficiary require explanation and renewed checks.
Verification should also cover whether the named contracting party can lawfully transfer title and issue the required commercial and export documents. A credible chain of authority should connect the producer or lawful seller to the party signing the contract; website references, branded documents or access to samples do not replace that evidence.
Illustrative enquiry template — not real cargo
A practical enquiry could state: “Product form: copper concentrate; indicative assay: 25% Cu; illustrative lot size: 1,000 dry metric tonnes; destination: Durban; inspection: mutually appointed independent inspector at the agreed control point; contracting entity: full legal name and registration number required.” This is a hypothetical example, not an available Afrimet or Kamoa-Kakula cargo, specification, quantity or offer.
Buyers seeking to discuss a documented copper requirement may contact Afrimet or review our partnership approach. Any response remains subject to seller authority, product and origin verification, counterparty checks, documentation, applicable law and contract. Afrimet does not claim to own or supply copper from Kamoa-Kakula.
The useful next step is therefore modest: submit the required product form, specification, quantity, destination, inspection preference and contracting details for review. Afrimet can assess the enquiry without representing that a matching lot exists, that a particular producer will participate or that delivery can be achieved on an assumed schedule.
